“Buddy’s Law” Takes Effect in Maryland October 1, 2025
Starting October 1, 2025, Maryland pet owners will have stronger legal recourse when someone injures or kills their companion animal, thanks to the passage of “Buddy’s Law.”
Officially titled Civil Actions – Tortious Injury to or Death of Pet – Compensatory Damages, this new law increases the amount of compensatory damages that courts can award in cases involving harm to pets. Previously, the limit was capped at $10,000. Buddy’s Law increases that amount to $25,000.
The law applies when a person, or an animal under their ownership, direction, or control, causes tortious injury or death to someone else’s pet. This legislation marks a major step forward in recognizing pets not just as property, but as beloved family members whose loss or suffering carries deep emotional and financial impacts.
What This Means for Pet Owners
With the law going into effect this fall, pet owners in Maryland will be better protected and more fairly compensated if they suffer the loss or injury of a pet due to another party’s wrongful actions. The law sends a clear message: the well-being of our pets matters—and so does justice for the people who love them.
