The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule (RRP) requires that firms performing renovation, repair, and painting projects follow lead-safe work practices. The rule further demands that lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and pre-schools built before 1978 must have their establishment certified by EPA. The review was conducted in accordance with Section 610 of the Regulatory Flexibility Act, due to RRP’s impact on more than 300,000 businesses that perform millions of affected projects yearly.
Protecting Families and Children
EPA announced that the RRP rule would remain unchanged, and in 2018, numerous health reports found that the rule continued to benefit the physical and financial well-being of families throughout the country. A report from the Health Impact Project discovered that contractors compliant with EPA rule would protect about 211,000 children born in 2018 and provide future benefits of $4.5 billion. The RRP rule went into effect in 2010, and there have since been significant reductions in children’s exposure to lead.
Contractors can Apply Online
Whether you’re a contractor, property manager, or painter, it’s important to know how you can protect yourself and those who work for you from the dangers of lead exposure. Even the most ordinary renovation activities can create toxic lead dust that can harm your employees and clients. If you’re interested in becoming an EPA-accredited training provider, you can apply online today. If you are a homeowner, you are required to hire EPA-certified contractors.
Penalties for Noncompliant Parties
Noncompliant parties can face significant penalties for refusing to adhere to EPA standards. In 2016, the EPA completed over 100 federal enforcement actions against contractors, landlords, and property managers for violations of the RRP rule. Fines ranged from $760 to more than $400,000. No company is too big or too small to escape fines. The EPA took action against small businesses and mega-corporations alike for violations involving the new RRP rule.
